It is a common theme amongst therapists that Dis-ease = disease. However, every single person has different ways of relaxing and reducing stress & tension in their lives & it is important that you choose the one that is right for you.
At Newman's Natural Therapies, we offer Reflexology, Aromatherapy & Swedish massage. Some may think that these therapies are all grouped together as one - a relaxing massage - however they all work in different ways to ease tension in the body and some are more suitable than others depending on the individual.
Reflexology is not just "a relaxing foot massage" - It is based on the theory that different areas on the body "reflect" on different areas of the feet - Not just for physical tension, but emotional issues too - For instance, during Reflexology we treat the Right foot first - as this represents the past, and the left side represents the present. We also consider imbalances in the right side of the body to represent the "masculine" side of our personality and the left to represent the Female side.
In addition to this, different body organs hold different emotional stress - For instance the lungs represent grief & the stomach is the seat of our emotions. This is a common theme for most Complementary Therapies & therefore when imbalances are detected it may be due to physical or emotional difficulties - Nothing is ever clear cut. That is why it is important for your therapist to take a full & detailed questionnaire about your health & lifestyle - to enable them to build an appropriate treatment plan that is tailored to your needs.
In terms of massage - Aromatherapy & Swedish Massage (or deep tissue massage) have very different methods & are used for different reasons.
In Swedish Massage, the aim is to work deep into the muscle to ease tension that may be caused by physical issues (the way you sit at your desk, the way you pick up your child, hunched shoulders due to emotional tension etc) - In this case a carrier oil assists the hands in seeking out the tension spots and working deep into the muscle fibres to release any tension, enabling a feeling of relaxation.
Aromatherapy works in a very different way - Here, the massage is very light & gentle - almost Hypnotic as my tutor once informed me when I was in training. The hands assist the oils to do the work, as each oil has it's own beneficial properties the oils are selected and tailored to individual needs. During a massage the oils are absorbed by the body and work on the systems most requiring their needs.
Aromatherapy massage does not entail a deep working of the muscles - although - a Swedish massage can be combined with Aromatherapy oils to enhance the experience.
Make sure that you are clear with your therapist as to the outcome you would like to achieve to ensure you receive the experience most suited to you.
